Project
The Natural Laboratory “Andes del Sur de Chile”, mountain category, is a project executed by the Universidad Austral de Chile. It corresponds to one of the 5 projects funded by the “Nodes for the development in research of Natural Laboratories in Chile, call 2021”, of the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID), Subdirection of Networks, Strategies and Knowledge.

Natural Laboratory
The Southern Andes Natural Laboratory is the territory that extends between 38°- 44° south latitude in the mountains of the regions of La Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos, reaching an area of 52,891km2.
It is made up of 28 mountain communities: Collipulli, Ercilla, Victoria, Lautaro, Curacautín, Lonquimay, Melipeuco, Vilcún, Cunco, Villarrica, Pucón, Curarrehue, Panguipulli, Los Lagos, Rio Bueno, Futrono, Lago Ranco, Puyehue, Frutillar, Llanquihue, Puerto Octay, Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas, Cochamó, Chaitén, Hualaihue, Futaleufú and Palena, and is inhabited by 250.There are 250,000 people living in 40 towns and rural mountain territories.
The territory is highly rural (51.5%), the indigenous population is 13.7%, and its human development index is classified as medium-low. The Southern Andes have unique geological, biophysical and human occupation of the mountains on a planetary scale, presenting great climatic and geomorphological variability, natural assets and diverse ecosystem services that are fundamental for human development, as well as areas of high endemism and ecological value, spaces that are highly fragile to global changes.
Thematic Laboratory 2
GLOBAL CHANGE:
FOREST INTERACTIONS,
SOIL AND WATER RESOURCES
Evaluates the effects of natural and/or anthropogenic disturbances (volcanism, glaciers, fires) on vegetation, soils and water resources for the development of ecological restoration plans, modeling of future landscapes in the region and maintenance of key ecosystem services for human development.
Thematic Laboratory 3
LIFESTYLES
AND MOUNTAIN DWELLING
Understands the particularities of mountain sociocultural practices in the south of the world, to integrate these attributes in sustainable local development strategies and to propose models of territorial management of mountain territories in Chile.

At the UACH Campus in Puerto Montt: Participative mapping with the Research Office
The objective of the participatory mapping we carried out at the end of September in the Fisheries Room was to identify the thematic areas of interest of the UACH office in Puerto Montt.
Do you or have you done research in the territory?
of the Natural Laboratory?
The objective of this call is to integrate more researchers to this inter and transdisciplinary network that seeks to build a comprehensive knowledge system of mountain territories, guiding scientific development with territorial relevance.
